In his “from the RUHL BOOK” column
in the May 10, 1950, issue of The Sporting News, Oscar Ruhl wrote:
A close friend of Jackie Robinson
says that Jackie’s total earnings from his life-story movie, baseball salary
and endorsements for 1950 will run something like $135,000. One firm alone, a
maker of bubble gum, paid him $2,000 for the right to use his name.
I assume that the bubble gum company that paid Robinson two grand must have been Bowman, since Leaf was out of the baseball card market by 1950
